A brief history of the BJP — from its ideological roots to becoming India's largest political force — and a tribute to the leaders who guide us.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is India's largest political party by membership and parliamentary strength. Rooted in the philosophy of Integral Humanism and cultural nationalism, the party traces its lineage to the Jana Sangh (1951) before formally being established on 6 April 1980.
From two Lok Sabha seats in 1984 to a historic majority in 2014 and an even larger mandate in 2019, BJP's journey reflects a grassroots revolution built on governance, development, and national pride.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP has steered India into a new era of infrastructure, digital empowerment, and global standing while maintaining its commitment to Antyodaya — the welfare of the last person in line.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee establishes the Jana Sangh as a nationalist alternative, championing cultural unity and an undivided India.
Jana Sangh members join the Janata coalition after the Emergency, tasting power for the first time. This experience shaped the vision of a unified right-of-centre force.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani and other leaders form the Bharatiya Janata Party on the philosophy of Integral Humanism articulated by Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.
The party wins only 2 seats after Indira Gandhi's assassination. Rather than despair, BJP used this as a springboard to build a mass movement from the ground up.
The Ram Janmabhoomi movement and Advani's Rath Yatra galvanise supporters. BJP emerges as the main opposition with 120 Lok Sabha seats, signalling a political earthquake.
The NDA coalition under Atal Bihari Vajpayee forms a stable government. India conducts Pokhran-II nuclear tests, launches the Golden Quadrilateral highway project, and pursues bold economic reforms.
BJP wins 282 seats — a single-party majority not seen since 1984. Narendra Modi's "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" vision resonates across India, triggering a decade of transformation.
On the back of national security, welfare schemes like PM-KISAN, Ujjwala Yojana and Ayushman Bharat, BJP secures an even larger majority — a rare second-term surge in Indian democratic history.
PM Modi is sworn in for a third consecutive term, steering India's ambition to become a developed nation by 2047 — the centenary of Independence — with BJP leading the NDA alliance.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — literally translated as the National Volunteer Organisation — is an Indian right-wing, Hindu nationalist paramilitary volunteer organization. Founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, Maharashtra, it has grown into one of the world's largest non-governmental organizations.
The core philosophy of the RSS is rooted in Hindutva, a concept formalized by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The RSS positions itself as a cultural movement dedicated to the unification, character-building, and strengthening of the Hindu community to foster a resurgent Indian nation.
It is the ideological fountainhead of the Sangh Parivar which includes India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Narendra Modi rose from humble beginnings — helping his father sell tea near a railway station — to become India's longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. His journey is a testament to hard work, discipline, and an unrelenting will to serve.
Initiated into the RSS at age 8, Modi spent years as a pracharak travelling across India before joining BJP's organisational ranks. As Prime Minister since May 2014, his flagship programmes have brought tangible change to crores of Indians: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (pucca homes for all), Swachh Bharat Mission (open defecation free India), Jan Dhan Yojana (500M+ bank accounts), Ayushman Bharat (world's largest health insurance scheme), and PM-KISAN (direct income support to farmers).
